The Application of polypropylene fibers in mortar

The Application of polypropylene fibers in mortar

2026-01-07

Polypropylene fiber is a synthetic fiber made from polypropylene as raw material. It features light weight, chemical corrosion resistance and high cost performance. When added to mortar, it can significantly improve its mechanical properties and durability, and is widely used in the field of construction engineering.

Improve the crack resistance of mortar

During the hydration and hardening process of ordinary mortar, shrinkage stress is generated due to water evaporation and temperature changes, which may lead to cracks. Polypropylene fibers are uniformly distributed in a random direction within the mortar, forming a three-dimensional network structure. This can effectively restrict the plastic shrinkage and dry shrinkage deformation of the mortar, disperse stress concentration points, prevent the generation and expansion of micro-cracks, and significantly reduce the probability of mortar cracking. It is particularly suitable for areas prone to cracking such as wall plastering mortar and floor leveling mortar.

Second, enhance the impact resistance and wear resistance of mortar

The addition of fibers enhances the internal connection strength of the mortar. When the mortar is subjected to impact or friction, the fibers can absorb energy through their own pulling and breaking, reducing the damage and peeling on the surface of the mortar. Therefore, polypropylene fiber mortar is often used in scenarios with high requirements for wear resistance and impact resistance, such as industrial plant floors, garage floors, and sidewalk paving.

Enhance the impermeability and durability of mortar

Evenly distributed polypropylene fibers can block the connection paths of capillary channels within the mortar, reducing the invasion of moisture and harmful ions (such as chloride ions and sulfate ions), thereby enhancing the mortar's impermeability, freeze-thaw resistance and chemical erosion resistance, and extending the service life of the mortar structure. It is suitable for damp or corrosive environments such as basements and kitchens and bathrooms.

Engineering Application Scenarios

1. Wall engineering: Polypropylene fibers are added to the interior and exterior wall plastering mortar to prevent hollowing and cracking of the wall surface, and to enhance the flatness and stability of the wall.

2. Floor engineering: Floor leveling mortar and wear-resistant floor mortar to enhance the wear resistance and impact resistance of the floor and prevent sanding and peeling.

3. Waterproofing project: As an enhancing component of waterproof mortar, it improves the impermeability of the mortar and assists waterproof membranes or coatings in forming a composite waterproofing system.

4. Repair works: Repair mortar for concrete structures and masonry structures, improving the adhesion between the repair layer and the base, and preventing cracking and peeling at the repair site.

Application Precautions

The fiber dosage should be controlled within a reasonable range, generally 0.05% to 0.2% of the mortar volume. Excessive dosage will lead to a decrease in the workability of the mortar and affect the construction operation.

2. During construction, it is necessary to ensure that the fibers are evenly dispersed in the mortar. Mechanical stirring can be adopted, and the stirring time should be extended to prevent the fibers from clumping.

3. Polypropylene fibers can only improve the toughness and durability of mortar, but cannot significantly enhance its compressive strength. In engineering, the mortar mix ratio should be reasonably designed based on the strength requirements. The Application of polypropylene fibers in mortar
